Something happened the other day that got me thinking.
It was a weekday, and we had nights out. Or rather, we went on a nights out since it's up to us whether we wanted to go out.
Anyway, we were all sitting at the bus stop - 5 of us, if my memory serves me. We were about to go for a movie and a meal and so we noted down the buses which will take us to our destination.
I sat myself down on the bench and proceeded to take out my blackberry and began to browse twitter/whatsapp.
A bus went past us before we realized it was one of the buses that we could take.
No matter, there were plenty other buses. Hence I looked out for any buses on our list.
Soon I went back to my phone and looked through facebook, re-reading my news feed even though I read it 10 minutes ago and I was pretty sure nothing fresh was on it.
Somewhere, my brain registered the sound of a bus driving near and I looked up, just in time to see another bus that we can take flying past us.
Wait, didn't no one else notice it?
I looked around and I realized everyone was looking at their phones. There were 2 other on the bench beside me, looking at their phones.
There was one guy standing up, looking at his phone.
Another friend was leaning against those concrete erections at the bus stop, also looking at his phone.
No one had seen or heard the bus.
That was when I decided to keep watch.
After a while, I saw bus 171 drawing near.
"Eh, can take 171 right?" I asked.
"Uhh...I think so.." muttered Chris, as he scrolled down some bicycle website.
"Eh serious lei serious, 171 coming already can take right?" I asked again, in a strong singlish accent.
"Yah.." mumbled LA, his face still transfixed to his bb.
I quickly double checked the bus directory, and confirmed that 171 was one of the correct buses.
Hastily I stood up and flagged down the bus, stopping it just in time.
"Eh go lei?" I told everyone.
That's when everyone started to look up and take in this new sight of a massive vehicle in front of them, as if they had no idea it existed.
'Orh this bus can ah?" someone asked me.
What the actual fuck.
Smartphones.
Wow.
I wonder how long would we have stayed there if I hadn't seen the bus.
And I'm going to change phone soon, to a smart(er) phone.
Nokia Lumia, perhaps.
And that'll be the day where we spend our nights out hanging around a bus stop.
