It's so damn convenient to have a vehicle. Be it a motorbike or a car.
Friends around me are all getting their driving licenses one by one and hence using driving as a means of transport. I even have a friend who can support himself enough such that he is able to afford a second hand car.
A lot of my men are getting motorbike licenses too.
Which makes me feel like getting one myself, however costly it make be.
Was in such a dilemma as to whether to sign up for BTT these few days.
Will it be worth it? I have yet to pay for my College fees and I haven't exactly been saving up. Shan't reveal how much I have in my bank account but it ain't much, given the incessant spending on items like Xbox, longboard and whatnot. With each costing a few hundred bucks.
Still, I really hope to own a bike/car one day.
Yet in Singapore, the odds are against us.
For a motorcyclist, the congested roads coupled with the poor skills of rash, young drivers nowadays will be the main drawback.
The safer choice would be to get a car then. Which probably means you'll be cashing out your entire savings.
Safety is expensive, but it is definitely more expensive in Singapore.
COE alone is more expensive than the car, which itself has the cost inflated to ridiculous level. One can easily get a decent used car in the States for what we spend on a motorbike in Singapore.
I recognize that there is a problem with traffic congestion in Singapore. It is almost impossible to reduce amount of cars on the road. So perhaps we can encourage the consumption of motorbikes in Singapore?
Probably can start with making riding safer in Singapore. Like certain congested roads or those with the highest motorcycle accidents to include a new riding lane specifically for motorcycles. Honestly it isn't so hard to do considering how our government is always doing roadworks every now and then. With careful planning, a large scale project can definitely be done within a couple of months.
So far all I've seen the government do to alleviate the problem with over-population of cars is to hike up prices, both the good and the COE. This seems to be the only approach they have.
Sure, there have been many policies and movements to encourage usage of public transport.
It's not a bad idea. Not at all.
It's just that our public transport themselves are always clogged up during peak hours, and don't get me started on the services.
It's no longer a rare sight to hear someone complaining about delays and breakdowns with our metro trains. Cabbing too, ain't cheap with surcharges mutilating the prices. Seriously do they even listen to the cab drivers on what they want?
A fare hike will only serve to disfavour everyone, cabbie or passenger. Well, excluding the corporate bastards of course.
I wonder how the government think that everyone can afford the obscene fares of the taxis nowadays.
Perhaps they should come up with a system to reduce fares for the less affluent people. Perhaps students and NSFs get a little discount on fares in general. It'll be like the MRT and buses.
If what they fear is the abuse of the system - a student pairing up with an adult to get cheaper fares, maybe the fares can be varied based on the constituents. i.e. 1 Adult with 1 student > 2 Students, 2 Adults with 1 Student > 1 Adult with 2 Students and henceforth.
A government should work by listening to its people. You gain your votes when you promise control and prosperity, yet return with fare hikes and foreign talent as a way of financial development; you organize talks so that we can voice our opinions and question your actions, yet you prevaricated when faced with questions you have no idea how to answer.
Seriously, 'What do you think?' is not an answer that people expect from a politician.
What the fuck.

Okay, this post started out with me wanting to share my love for motorbikes but ended up being a rant.
I apologize for the lengthy post.
And now. a quote from one of my favourite movies, directed at my favourite superhero which I feel kind of fits the situation.
There's a storm coming, Mr. Wayne. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us. - Selina Kyle
